The Dodgers trailed 5-0 after four innings after the Yankee bats started off hot with back-to-back home runs from Aaron Judge and Jazz Chisholm Jr. in the first inning. They were the first back-to-back homers for the Bronx Bombers in the World Series since Thurman Munson and Reggie Jackson did it in Game 5 in 1977, also against the Dodgers.

When Buehler struck out Verdugo to end the game, the Dodgers poured onto the field to celebrate between the mound and first base, capping a season in which they led the big leagues with 98 wins. With several thousand Dodgers fans remaining in a mostly empty stadium, baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred presented the trophy on a platform quickly erected over second base.

“This game was no different than our entire season,” Muncy said. “Get dealt a couple blows, come back from it. Get dealt some blows, come back from it. This game was literally our season in a nutshell. And it was special.”
Next game of the world series
The MLB playoff bracket is down to its final two. The Detroit Tigers, San Diego Padres, Kansas City Royals and Philadelphia Phillies were all eliminated in the League Division Series. The Milwaukee Brewers, Atlanta Braves, Baltimore Orioles and Houston Astros were all knocked out in the Wild Card Series to kick off October.
This World Series should also mark the first one since 1980 when two players making their World Series debuts won the MVP that season (Mike Schmidt with the Philadelphia Phillies and George Brett with the Kansas City Royals). That, of course, will be true if Ohtani and Judge win the MVP award, as is widely expected.

And here’s an interesting side note: Yankees outfielder Alex Verdugo came up with the Dodgers as a prized prospect before he was traded to the Boston Red Sox in the winter of 2020 for … Mookie Betts. Verdugo wound up in Boston for four seasons before being traded to the Yankees this past offseason in a rare swap between the two heated rivals. Now, he and Betts will square off.
